Bimba versus Pastinha: duel of ideas about capoeira
    Salvador, 31/10/1965

    Pieces of the article

«In 1945, more or less, I heard someone speak about Mestre Pastinha. Some time after he sent me an invitation to go to his place. I didn't go there, nor did he come here. We met in various places, later, without either of us talking about capoeira. What's up, how's it going?»

    Mestre Bimba

«I am not the least familiar with Mestre Bimba and only know him superficially, hi, what's up, how's it going?, there is no resentment between us or rivalry, because we both teach the same capoeira style. As a matter of fact, once I invited him, personally and not by a card, to visit our academy and see my boys play. He didn't come nor did I go there.»

    Mestre Pastinha

«[..] for what I know, he [Pastinha] didn't have a mestre, learning on the docks, playing in the rodas, learning by himself.»

    Mestre Bimba

«She [capoeira] is one: that of angola. Capoeira regional does not exist. Regional is just a name created by Mestre Bimba, angoleiro same as me. Bimba teaches his students to play faster, while I determine my movements slow and cunning, following the teachings of my Mestre Benedito.»

    Mestre Pastinha

«The negros, were indeed from Angola, but capoeira is from Cachoeira, Santo Amaro and Ilha de Maré, my friend.»
